55. Ascaridiosis

Causative agent 
- Ascaris suum


Differential diagnosis 
- Coccidiosis
- Colibacillosis


1. History taking 
- Lower resistance to other diseases (especially
  enzootic pneumonia and influenza)
- High incidence in young animals


2. Clinical examination 
- Poor growth in piglets, emaciation, weight loss,
  anemia, icterus
- Severe cough and bronchospasm
- Abdominal breathing (thumps)
- Mechanical obstruction of the intestine


3. Fecal examination 
- Flotation method
- Occasional adult worms in feces


4. Necropsy 
- Carcass in poor condition
- Severe pneumonitis
- Detection of adult worms in small intestine
- In a massive infestation, liver becomes enlarged
  and congested
- Leukocykic and fibrosis appearing as "milk spots"
  under the liver capsule

5. Microscopic examination 
- Detection of larvae by examination of scrapings
  of bronchial mucus under microscope


6. Histopathological observation 
- Edema and emphysema lung with larva
- Granulomatous with eosinophils, histiocytes and
  giant cells in liver


Control and treatment 
- Avoid feeding uncooked garbage and green
  vegetable to young pigs
- Avoid exposure of young pigs to infested adults
  and contaminated soil
- Mass chemotherapy in young pigs, given at an
  intervals of 6 months
