1. History taking
- High morbidity in piglets
- Poor management and sanitation
2. Clinical examination
- Itching
- Thickened, rough and dry skin
- Skin inflammation, presence of small red papules
and general erythema
- Skin covered with grayish crusts, thrown into large
fold
- Skin lesions on the head (preferred site is the inner
ears), over body, tail and legs
- Slow growth rate

3. Microscopic examination
- Detection of mites in skin scrapings, especially the
external ears, under microscope
- Maceration method (dip skin scrapings in 10%
potassium hydroxide and examine under
microscope)
Control and treatment
- Isolation of infested pigs
- Thoroughly repeat treatment with effective
acaricides
- Clean the stall and surrounding area
- Buildings and materials in a dry state for 3 weeks
- Prevention by routine treatment of all pigs after
weaning, a month before farrowing in sows and
prior to breeding season in boars
