PREFACE |
This is the Third Edition of the publication Standard Diagnostic Manual for |
Livestock Diseases in Thailand. The National Institute of Animal Health (NIAH) published in 1994 the original Edition, the NIAH Standard Diagnostic Techniques to serve as a standard which would enhance the accuracy and uniformity of the diagnostic activities not only at NIAH but also at Regional Veterinary Research and Diagnostic Laboratories (RVRDL), nation-wide. Modeled on the Japanese Diagnostic Manual published in 1985, the original edition had a simple and practical format and flowcharts of diagnostic procedures for 33 diseases which are thought important in Thailand and neighboring Southeast Asian countries.

The Second Edition of Manual was published in 1996, adding the several |
important diseases and new diagnostic technologies. Since then, we have experienced the rapid progress in the disease diagnostic fields, particularly, areas of molecular technology and genetic engineering. Also, the OIE Manual of Standards for Diagnostic Tests and Vaccines, an internationally accepted Standards, were extensively revised and brought out its latest edition in 2000. Thus, in order to cope with the last 6-year development, the Editorial Committee for the Third Edition was created in 2002. This Edition maintains the file system of the two predecessors so that new information could be easily added into the manual on the individual basis. The completely new feature of the current Edition is the inclusion of COLOR ATLAS, which we hope, will add the great value to the present Edition, for the diagnosis based on the simplicity and practicability.

We would like to sincerely express our gratitude to members of the Editorial |
Committee, the staff of NIAH and RVRDL, and Japanese experts who all paid the special efforts to bring out this Third Edition.
It is hoped that this publication could be widely used at both laboratories and |
fields by veterinary professionals and technicians not just in Thailand but also in most countries of Southeast Asia.
