- PED virus, family Coronaviridae

Differential diagnosis
- Transmissible gastroenteritis
- Hemagglutinating encephalomyelitis virus infection

1. Epidemiology
- PED virus is transmitted by fecal-oral route
- Fattening pigs are more susceptible to virus
infection and 100% morbidity during an outbreak
- The progress of the infection occurs at a slower
rate with longer incubation period than TGE virus
  infection

2. Clinical examination
- Anorexia and depress
- Watery diarrhea and abdominal pain
- PED is more severe than TGE

3. Necropsy
- Small intestine distended with yellowish fluid

4. Histophathological observation
- Vacuolation and exfoliation of enterocytes on the
small intestinal villi at the early infection and later
  shortening of villi occurs

5. Serological test
Specimens : acute and convalescent paired sera
Method      : SN test

6. Antigen dectection
Specimens : small intestine
Method      : FA test on cryostat section

7. Virus isolation
Specimens : intestine and fecal contents
Method      : Vero cell culture inoculation and CPE
observation

8. Virus identification
- FA test

Control
