Activity and Input Plan in Lao PDR for JFY 2005 |
Background and Purpose
Lao PDR shares long borders with 5 countries, which facilitates invasion of infectious diseases, and lately, they have been spreading over the country probably due to natural phenomena such as climatic changes and flood. In addition, insufficient supply of vaccine and inability of animal movement regulation have worsened the situation. For that reason, the Project has aimed to control animal diseases in the Indochina Region by improvement of regional cooperation system and resources for effective animal disease control, disease surveillance techniques, vaccine production and quality control techniques, and animal quarantine techniques. |

2. Improvement of diagnostic ability of National Animal Health Center (NAHC) and vaccine production of Animal Vaccine Production Center (AVPC) by experts
Basically, Thai experts are dispatched from Northeastern Regional Veterinary Research and Development Center in Khon Kaen (Khon Kaen Center) for its long-term cooperation with NAHC. For the following diseases or subjects experts are dispatched to improve diagnostic techniques.
a) Serological diagnosis (leptospirosis, Johne's Disease, etc., Thai expert)
b) Virus isolation/identification/diagnosis (classical swine fever, avian viral diseases, etc., Thai or Japanese experts)
c) Brucellosis or Tuberculosis (Thai or Japanese expert)
d) Pathology in general (Thai expert)
e) Engineer for maintenance (Japanese expert)
Japanese experts on viral and bacterial diseases works on the improvement of the overall diagnostic system of NAHC so that the techniques transferred can take root in the Center firmly. The Japanese expert on maintenance shall work at AVPC mainly for the inspection and maintenance of equipment so that the vaccine production system becomes more effective. |
3. Extension of animal health service in the field
Collaborating with the Forest Management and Community Support Project (FORCOM) of JICA , the techniques and procedures of animal health services are transferred to the officers and VVWs in the region through collaborative field work in the four villages (FORCOM Project sites) near Louangphrabang. In addition, samples taken through the services are brought back to NAHC for serological tests and the data obtained will be utilized as basic information on animal diseases in Lao. One staff specialized in the field work is dispatched from Khon Kaen Center for technical transfer to NAHC staff, officers, VVWs and farmers. |
