National Animal Health Center (NAHC)
The Center was founded in 1965 supported by the Government of France and now belongs to Department of Livestock and Fisheries. The Diagnostic Field Laboratories are locates in 4 provinces (Louangphrabang, Xiengkhuang, Savannaket, Champasak), which comprises domestic preventive network on diagnosis of infectious diseases.

National Animal Health Center
The duties of the Center are animal health services such as vaccination and treatment, and diagnosis of animal diseases in the country in order to prevent and control infectious diseases. Eight veterinarians working at the Center studied in Russia, Mongolia, Czech Republic and Thailand to obtain a degree as Lao PDR does not have a veterinary school.
The mortality of calves in Laos is very high (about 25% probably due to round worm) and parasites are problematic in animals aged 0-3 months old. In addition, haemorrhagic septicaemia and anthrax are often obserbed in cattle. Fasciola infection is very common in buffaloes and nearly 50% of animals are found infected in slaughterhouses.
In pigs the mortality of piglets is 5% and outbreaks of hog cholera are often reported from the south. In the end of 2001 Aujeszky's Disease outbroke in Laos and local breed was also affected.

The center is trying to promote vaccination among farmers, however, it hasn't been successful due to farmers' poor understanding on the necessity and efficacy of vaccines. Moreover, vaccination seems to be laborious because animals are grazed in the fiels.
Animal Vaccine Production Center (AVPC)
AVPC has 5 units: Viral Vaccine Production, Bacterial Vaccine Production, Quality Control, Laboratory Animal Unit and Administration with 22 staff, producing over a total of 5-6 million doses of vaccines against haemorrhagic septicaemia, classical swine fever, fowl cholera, duck plague, Newcastle disease and infectious bursal disease. However, the quality of the vaccines do not meet the ASEAN standards as the eggs utilized for the production are not SPF, therefore, the improvement of the quality is necessary.
